Unresolved past is destiny. It repeats until we have the courage to work together to face it.

FAMILY CONSTELLATIONS

Family Constellations is my favorite tool for discovering seen and unseen familial and collective stories that keep playing out in our lives and contribute to our sense of being stuck in repeating the survival instruction manuals given to us by our ancestors. It is a unique work of integrating parts of our essential self and moving into our own untold life story we always knew we wanted to live. Family Constellations is a way of being free to choose your response to an old feeling or relational pattern in us. It is meant to restore the flow of love within ourselves by focusing on what has been rejected, forgotten or dismissed in our ancestors' lives and systems we belong to.

This multidimensional work is focused on restoring a sense of belonging to ourselves, our families, ancestors, systems we are in.

Family Constellations was developed by Bert Hellinger, a Western educated psychotherapist who drew inspiration from trauma healing practices of Zulus tribe in South Africa as well as mainstream psychotherapy traditions such as psychoanalysis, psychodrama, and family systems therapy.

n a typical Family Constellations group workshop session, a person might bring up any life issue they want to look at. It might sound like : “I don’t feel seen by people I work for”, “I keep falling in love with partners who are too dependent on me”, “I can’t keep or save money” or “I self-sabotage whenever I get close to becoming successful at work”. A pattern of behavior and its function in one’s lifetime or across the generations is often explored during this inquiry stage.

With the client’s current goal in mind, a constellation session tends to zero in on the client’s early systems of belonging (mother or father line or previous relationships). Discovery of the internalized preverbal, implicit and embodied aspects of these felt relationships is the focus.  In a brief interview, the facilitator usually asks the seeker to select representatives for them and for others who seem relevant to the inquiry. The client might be asked to place the representatives as people (if in a group workshop setting) or some objects collected in the room in order to create a visual embodied constellation of the parts of the felt experience of the issue at stake.

These right-brain based felt senses reported by the representatives are then used by the facilitator to propose an experimental resolution based on constellation movements observed in this unfolding process. Restoring the belonging, setting proper boundaries, allowing love to flow, balancing the give and take, and acknowledgment and acceptance of "what is" are some of the outcomes of a constellation session. The newly found shift in perspective can help with re-writing the old story and add freedom in choosing life we truly want to live.
